Agenda: Review of the Efficiency of The Places of Worship, Special Provisions Act, 1991
The Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, was enacted to maintain the religious status quo of places of worship as they stood on August 15, 1947, and prevent any alteration. However, questions regarding its effectiveness in maintaining communal harmony and addressing legal challenges have emerged. This committee will focus on evaluating the efficiency of the Act in today’s context, considering issues of religious freedom, historical disputes, and the role of the state in protecting cultural heritage.
